This week I trained somebody who had been working at her company for over 10 years, and it was apparent as soon as she walked in the door that she was in terrible pain. She was wincing while holding the lower part of her back as she shuffled across the floor and then lowered herself into the seat.
When I asked her what was wrong, she told me that she has a serious problem with her back and she has had to wait 6 weeks while waiting to see a specialist. It is likely she is going to need an operation to fix the issue and in the mean time, can’t do much more than take a concoction of pills and medication.
I thought surely she should be home taking it easy, but she explained that she was dreading needing to have an operation as it would mean she would have to take an extended period off of work, and her boss has a large chunk of work coming up.
It was suddenly apparent to me just how afraid people are when it comes to job security. I explained that generally, employees are understanding and would prefer that you look after yourself and get better. At the end of the day, your health is more important than anything else because without it, nothing else really matters.
If a company is not prepared to allow you time to recover properly, then do you really want to work for a company that doesn’t have your best interests at heart? And always remember, no matter what situation you find yourself in, things always have a way of working themselves out.
As humans, we tend to fear the worst, but when the situation arises, 9 out of 10 times, it was nowhere near as bad as you imagined. Sometimes you just need to take a step back and wonder “what’s really the worst that could happen”.
Don’t live in fear…it’s simply not worth it.
